View Full Version : WoW Coming to an end - still worth it to play?

Okay so I've been reading around the net for a while, and i've been hesitant to post this because I wasn't sure it was true, until I asked blizzard myself in an e-mail.... and after a few weeks.. got a response.
From what I've read from websites and articles by blizzard and from what this e-mail kinda says..., World of Warcraft is only being supported by blizzard until mid-late 2008 or so. After that, they don't plan to do any other heavy updates on World of Warcraft. The reason for this is because they are putting their full efforts into a new game that is coming out around the same time, although I am still trying to figure out the name of the game or what type of game it is....
Anyways, I'm wondering if WoW is still worth it.. We give all our time, efforts, as well as $15+ a month ($16.23 for me lol), and for what? ::
1) Were all already 70 I assume.... cant level up anymore
2) We've all conquered every battleground.
3) We've all gotten our reputations to a satisfying point (for the most part).
4) We can't gear up much more than we are now.... Not really if you think about it.
In my opinion, the game is beaten... We've all beaten it, time and time again. The expansion came out, and we conquered that too. The fact of the point is, that this game is actually lacking content. Blizzard has always had incredible/amazing games, but been slow to update them.... So I guess i'm considering pulling the plug on WoW.....
any opinions?

The new game that there talking about... I'm assuming is starcraft 2 there probably talking about having updates for the battle.net. Patches and ect..
Iv actually canceled my account. i'm in the same boat as you are in. I did it not regretting it although I still enjoy watching videos, and talking about WoW. I also actually read news and stuff and keep in touch with friends on the game so I know whats going on!
I can't really tell you if its worth it or not everyone has there own opinion but all games get old eventually!

I canceled my WoW account a few months ago, mostly due to boredom of the same thing over and over again. I've pretty much been cutting of more and more links to WoW, I think you could say. I'm still in the guild I was in, and I still visit Warcraftmovies.com (but that's because of the machinima) but that's about all connections I still have with WoW.
The game they are gonna release is probably Starcraft 2, as Kiahann said. I'm tired of the game, if you aren't well, then keep on playing. You haven't really played because it has a reason? You play WoW because you enjoy the game, not because you have a final goal to achieve, or you can have, it's just that the goal is always pushed forward.
Looking forward to WAR or AoC now.

The way I see it is that all the lore has just about been released. What more can they release? I would continue playing but I lack one thing, I refuse to play solo. Friends and family is all I can stand to play with.

Sounds like a wise idea... was a long time ago now wow came out... it's a good game but it all revolves around getting gear. Try something new :)
And about the new game they are developing I think they mean starcraft 3... which will be a big release.

You sure you don't mean Starcraft 2? Which haven't released yet :P
Anyway, I'm really considering "pulling the plug" on my WoW as well, it's getting boring, same thing all over again, done it all, and cba to level another toon just to get him to 70 and gear him which takes even longer to even be close to anyone else.
Got a level 70 full epic rogue and I'm getting quite tired of it, also a 70 pally, below average geared and I cba to gear it up, since people are ages ahead of that one.
Even if I was geared it wouldn't be the same feeling as I had pre-TBC, before you were covered in epics and shit.
Atm I'm really close to quittin' until Warhammer Online comes out, which will be a fresh start for me, until then I will probably enjoy being free of such games for a while, also for getting the feelin' back of it, really waitin' for it makes it more worth when it finally comes :)
I've heard Warhammer will be much more brutal and less cartoon-ish and "funny"-looking than WoW, which will be a big difference (I'm not saying the cartoon-ish feeling is all bad, in fact it's quite original, though change is good tbh sometimes :)).. <3 gief tbh

The magic from WoW was only to be found when you did not knew everything, when you had places to explore, before it was a rush from level to level.
WoW was only playable until they removed the original honorsystem, about right before the BC-release.
I stop my billing in 17 september 2007.

any game can get old if you play it for too long. yes, WoW doesn't really have long term appeal if you play it everyday, but if you take breaks its not so bad.

I agree with the ones that said WoW was fun when everything was new. I used to admire how gear some 70's looked when I was only in my 10's to 30's. But now that I have a 70 and have raided and pvp'd a lot, nothing really seems to exciting.
I still play because of friends but WoW sucked me out of all my interests as of late and really don't do anything other then play WoW, play basketball, go to class and hang with friends. I made a few alts and it has relieved the stress that WoW was a job, which is a terrible feeling for me.

Are you fuckin stupid? your arguing over is it worth it to waist your life on a game. Jesus obviously not go outside and live your life. When your an old man you'll regret the years spent. I quit a while back havnt even attempted to reinstall but i still like the warcraft movies.

Seriously, stop listening to bull rumors. They're just that, rumors. They're not planning to stop support in the middle of 2008. Unless they lose a heavy lot of players.

WoW will be like UO, around for 20 years. Heck UO is still kicking and it still remains fun.

Wow...that is complete and total BS, unless you actually have the email that Blizzard themselves have sent you to prove it.
Why would Blizzard stop supporting a game that has given them more money than God? WoW has the Wrath of the Lich King coming up, and after that they can do the Emerald Dream, as well as focus on the Naga. So WoW still has at least 2 more years of new content ahead of it.
And people who say that all of the lore has been covered need to realize that just because the lore from the past 3 games has been covered, that doesn't mean that players have experienced every event in the history of Azeroth.
Also, people seem to be forgetting that Blizzard WRITES their own lore. This isn't a movie license people. Blizzard can always write more lore and expand the universe if they need to. Stop thinking on such a shallow level.

I doubt they will just cut WoW, this is their main source of income.
They still have many, many, many expansions to release and many possibilities for new content, if lore is a problem they can just make it up.
Played WoW since feb 05 and I've never got bored, not once, I love this game and I won't stop playing anytime soon.

I'm sure unless blizzard makes another Mmorpg that tops WoW, WoW will always be there main source of income atleast untill it dies which I think WoW will be around as long as EQ is. But games like Star craft 2 that is coming out and the new expansion i wouldn't be surprise if they make a WoW 2 in the future.

10mio players, I don't think this game is going down just now, but personally I think WoW lack a lot and the support is poor... Lately I've been playing Eve Online and it's a very nice game too.

Diablo 3 is in the works, World of warcraft is by no means shutting down anytime soon, Releasing WOTLK and then shutting the game down wouldn't make sense, And there would be an awful lot of lawsuits.

11 million players world wide.. No way they are shuting down a game until they have milked it for the very last drop.
I wouldnt be surprised if they come up with new lore in the future just to keep the money flowing.

They would have to. It's not like you can just keep releasing new expansions about the same content (lore-wise). That would get old fast.

What if WoW gets like 20 years old, and you have like 15 expansions you have to install if your computer crashes .__.
Some people might not be bothered to install :exclaim:ONE SINGLE GAME:exclaim: for hours on end, and then paying money to play. I'd imagine that if you have a computer crash, that might be the end of some people's WoW career...
EDIT: - and think about new players who need to go buy all the 15 expansions. That's alot of money. Or if someone wants a new account. All those CD-keys...
Let's just hope WoW lasts long, but not too long.

WoW is still a tremendous cash-cow which I'm sure Blizzard won't be in any rush to shut down or sell off, not by a long-shot, despite the huge decline in players with each expansion for multiple reasons.
With Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 (One game I *am* looking forward to as an avid player of the two previous ones) in the works, I assumed that the bulk majority of the core Blizzard team jumped ship to work on these new projects, potentially leaving a backup squad or new recruits to contend with the simple tweaking and maintenance of the current WoW - Possibly leading to many of the questionable changes being made that are responsible for putting so many dedicated players of the past off of WoW and making many quit, such as making the game far more casual orientated and the same general attitude being ported to PvP to make things 'easier' and 'more accessible' for the casuals who felt hard-done by in TBC arena and PvP of the past.
I'm highly dissapointed with WoW's current state but there isn't much better to compete with it - And until worthwhile competition comes along and players continue to fork out money for WoW, there will always be new content created to keep those people paying.
I forked out on two sub-cards quite some time ago that wont run out for a few months which should carry me over into 3.2 - With PvP being my main focus, if there isn't a shred of respectability put back into it, I doubt I'll have much reason to stay on.
